Why Your Promo Code Isn't Working: A Checkout Troubleshooting Guide

A practical diagnostic path for separating typing errors from basket, account, region, redemption-limit, and discount-combination restrictions.

Why Your Promo Code Isn't Working: A Checkout Troubleshooting Guide

Short answer: do not place the order until the payable total reflects the discount. If it does not, start with the exact offer terms and checkout message. Then test the basket, account, region, and competing discounts. An ‘invalid’ response can reflect an eligibility rule as well as a typing mistake.

Identify the failure first

A code can fail before checkout recognizes it, after recognition when no products qualify, or after a basket edit removes the saving. Retyping cannot fix an account restriction, while changing products will not fix an extra space.

Work from the rules to the basket

Read the exact terms

Check validity, market, purchase channel, customer status, account requirements, and maximum redemptions. Google Store documents failures for expired offers, unsupported countries or addresses, previously used codes, exhausted limits, and promotions restricted to particular accounts or apps. These are diagnostic categories, not universal retailer wording.

Confirm accurate entry

Use the promotion field rather than a gift-card field. Remove leading or trailing spaces and compare similar letters and numbers. ASOS, for example, tells shoppers to enter the code exactly and without spaces. A badge is not enough: the payable total must fall.

Test product eligibility

Terms may exclude brands, partner goods, gift cards, or reduced products. iHerb's guidance points shoppers to product and brand exclusions, the minimum subtotal, and prior use. When the terms do not identify the item, remove products one at a time and reapply the code.

Recalculate the threshold

Only eligible products may count toward a minimum, depending on the offer. Shipping, tax, wrapping, and excluded items may be outside the calculation when the merchant's rules say so. The displayed basket total can exceed the headline threshold while the qualifying amount remains too low.

Then check customer eligibility

Account, country, and payment profile

Offers may be limited to new customers, email recipients, a specific account, country, currency, app, or payment method. Google Play recommends checking the signed-in account, country, and payment method. A private window cannot make an ineligible account eligible, but it can clear stale checkout state.

Prior use and campaign limits

A previously used code may be limited to one redemption per account or order. A campaign can also reach its overall cap before the advertised end. Review order history and the signed-in identity before trying repeatedly. After a failed payment, check whether an order or temporary authorization exists and ask the retailer about transaction status.

Check combinations last

Combination behavior is merchant-controlled. Shopify lets merchants configure whether codes and automatic discounts combine. Remove one offer, compare the payable totals, and keep the better permitted result. Two banners do not prove that two discounts applied.

Retry once, then gather evidence

Refresh the basket, sign back into the intended account, and try a new browser session or official app if the promotion is app-only. This cannot bypass product, account, or regional restrictions. Do not change country or payment details to claim an ineligible offer.

If the code still fails, save the exact error, basket, totals, offer terms, account region, and time. Never send a password or full payment credentials. Retailer support may inspect the order; CouponX cannot apply a merchant discount after checkout.

Common questions

Why does it work for another shopper?

The checkouts may differ by country, account status, customer history, payment method, basket, or offer access. Compare eligibility rules, not only the code.

Why did the discount vanish after a basket edit?

The eligible amount may have fallen or an excluded item may have been added. Finalize the basket, reapply the code, and verify the payable total.

Can two promo codes be used together?

Only if the merchant allows that exact combination and the final total shows both savings. Use the full promo-code compatibility guide to test the stacking rules safely.

How is this different from CouponX checking?

This guide diagnoses a shopper's checkout. The CouponX checking methodology explains how CouponX reviews offers before publication.
